The Three Pillars of Health

Ayurveda's foundation of health is simple, if you take care of a few fundamental things, disease has a much harder time taking hold.

When I sit down with a new client, we cover a lot of ground: your constitution, current imbalances, daily rhythms. But the first things we address are the three foundational pillars of health. Get this right, and the body will start to repair, regulate, and stay resilient. When these are neglected, no supplement or protocol will fully compensate.

This is one of Ayurveda's boldest claims: "The person who manages these three pillars well, will not have their life cut short by disease."

Before we dive in, a quick recap on the 3 Doshas (Dosha means bioenergetic force). In Ayurveda everything from our genetic makeup to the time of day, seasons, or food is framed around the 3 doshas. Pitta, Vata, and Kapha. Pitta has the qualities of fire (hot, sharp, liquid, mobile, oily). Vata has the qualities of air (light, dry, mobile, subtle cold). Kapha has the qualities of earth (heavy, cold, smooth, dense, hard, soft, stable). Our unique genetic make up is called an Ayurvedic Constitution.

Pillar One: Food

Ayurveda doesn't think in terms of good or bad foods. It thinks in terms of whether a food will bring us more into balance.

A kapha person eating ice cream in January when it’s cold outside, further increases Kapha. A pitta person eating spicy food in summer further increases Pitta. On the flip side, warm oatmeal with ghee in winter grounds Vata. The same food can help one person and create imbalance in another.

Some basic guidelines:

  • Cooked, warm, moist food digests easier than cold or raw

  • Eat with your constitution and the season (warm in the winter, cooler in the summer)

  • Keep consistent mealtimes, digestion is strongest 10am to 2pm

  • Skip the grazing, it dilutes digestive strength

  • Stop eating three hours before bed

The question isn't “Is this food good or bad?” It's “Does this food restore balance?”

Pillar Two: Sleep

People are finally recognizing the value of high-quality sleep. But awareness doesn't necessarily fix sleep issues. Most people now know sleep matters but they aren't sleeping any better.

That's because sleep struggles usually have a root cause, and in Ayurveda, that root cause is a dosha out of balance.

Vata: tend to be light sleepers, prone to insomnia and a racing mind at 2am. Grounding and warmth before bed helps.

Pitta: tend to fall asleep fine, then wake in the early hours overheated and wired. A cool room and less stimulation before bed makes the difference.

Kapha: tend to sleep long and deep, sometimes too deep, and wake groggy no matter how many hours they get. Light evening meals and more activity earlier in the day helps.

Some basic guidelines:

  • Consistent bedtime and wake time, the body thrives with rhythm

  • Wind down before bed instead of stimulating activities

  • Eat your heaviest meal earlier in the day, not right before bed

  • A dark, cool room supports deeper sleep regardless of constitution

This is where my work with clients comes in: finding which dosha is driving your specific sleep patterns, and how to restore balance, rather than layering on generic sleep hygiene tips.

Pillar Three: Sex

Ayurveda names it as a real pillar of health, right alongside food and sleep.

Sex is tied directly to Ojas, your vitality. Sex from genuine desire increases Ojas. Too much sex, sex with the wrong person or out of obligation, drains Ojas just as fast as bad sleep or weak digestion. Who you're having sex with and how often, matters to your health. Generally speaking, men become more depleted than women from sex.

Why This Matters

These three pillars aren't a health checklist, they are a system. Poor sleep drains digestion. Weak digestion drains vitality. Low vitality wrecks both sleep and libido. If we try to fix one in isolation the other two can pull you back down.

Most wellness advice treats food, sleep, and sex as three separate problems with three separate fixes. Ayurveda treats them as one system with one root cause.

I recommend starting by determining your constitution. Here's a questionnaire to help you figure it out.

When we work 1:1, you'll receive your Ayurvedic Health Profile, a personalized readout of your constitution and a strategy to rebuild your foundation.
